INTRODUCTION
The foremost and prestigious Department of Civil Engineering in Nigeria was established in 1962 as one of the pioneering Departments in the Faculty of Engineering (alongside Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) owing to the dearth of the necessary human capital needed to keep pace with engineering developments in the nation. Since inception, it has produced and nurtured exceptional graduates and staff who have achieved giant strides in their fields of endeavours and have served their communities in various noteworthy capacities and admirable leadership positions. In 2004, because of the need to make the programme more relevant to society, the environmental component was added to give the Department a new name, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Our Department offers a B.Sc. (Honours) degree programme in Civil and Environmental Engineering which is fully accredited by Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). We also offer postgraduate programmes leading to the award of PGD/M.Sc./M.Phil./Ph.D. degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Options available at the postgraduate levels are Structures, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, Highway and Transportation Engineering, and Foundation and Geotechnical Engineering.
We are committed to attracting and retaining highly-qualified and exceptional academics and professionals who are committed to our vision and objectives. Furthermore, collaborations and partnerships with key stakeholders both within the country and in the diaspora are welcomed unreservedly as we remain committed to improving our infrastructures and technology.
To be a reference point as trail-blazers in the scholarly advancement and application of science and technology through innovation and research with practical relevance to our society and the world at large.
To produce and sharpen minds in a lively and creative environment for learning, teaching and discovery, sharing diverse thinking and expertise, fostering and nurturing the next generation of leaders who understand the complexities of science and technology and are poised to meet the challenges of the 21st Century and beyond.
Ours is a Department with a conducive environment for students and researchers to be innovative, to work across disciplines and be entrepreneurial, all with the aim of making a real difference in our world. Here, we celebrate “the power of ideas” and support translating them into practical possibilities. We are committed to organic growth and continued progress and creative application of science and cutting-edge technologies to solving societal problems.
Our core philosophies are summed up as follows:
- D-Diversity: We promote diversity of thinking, expertise and race which enrich our pool of human resources and attract and retain top-quality brains.
- I-Innovation: We inspire minds to “think out of the box” thus encouraging and stimulating innovative ideas and research.
- C-Community Service: Practicable shared learning and knowledge that contribute to sustainable development are encouraged in an atmosphere of mutual trust, respect and teamwork.
- E-Entrepreneurship: Our products and staff are inspired to be entrepreneurial in the pursuit of their dreams as they contribute meaningfully to the society and the world at large.

- To nurture and stimulate innovative research in an atmosphere that is conducive for structured and continuous learning.
- To nurture disciplined minds that exemplify excellence, professionalism and high ethical standards.
- To promote strong partnerships with the industry and other stakeholders in the deployment and development of local and sophisticated technologies in solving engineering problems.
